It is also the name of the chief town sited at the south-east end of the isle, which with its 50.000 inhabitants offers a delicious choice among places to visit and street market to make shopping.. 
The isle of Phuket, with its long sandy beaches and calcareous rocks is placed in front of the west coast of South Thailand, in the Andamane Sea  

The inside land is hilly, and characterized by different “microclismi”, is totally covered by luxuriant tropical forests, authentic paradises for all the nature-lovers.

At the end of  September is celebrated the most important feast for Phuket, the Vegetarian Feast, coinciding with the month of  taoistic Lent. In this period the believers abstain from the consumption
of meat and its by-products, taking part to meetings and offers in the temples, votive processions, cultural shows accompanied by the usual petards as a good greeting.

At the apex of the Feast you can assist to a series of incredible acts of mortification , from the walking on burning coals to the slope of stairs made by blades of knives.

THE BEST PHUKET BEACHES:

HAT MAI KHAO: The longest beach of the isle, quiet and relaxing because not very crowded From November to February It is place of rest for enormous sea tortoises coming here to lay eggs.

HAT NAI YANG: It is inside the natural park of Sarinat . The bay is covered by a mangroves forest and green hills with imposing shapes, surround the sides of the road driving to the beach.

HAT SURIN: More crowded than the last two, these beaches with their white sand has got more comforts then the others and more structures at their disposal.

HAT PATONG: It is the beach most famous of the isle, excelent for swimming, taking the sun, ad going boating. Patong Beach is also famous for night-time life, shopping, and the Spa.

HAT RAWAI: Among the south beaches a particular importance holds the beach of rawai  where the so-called sea gypsies, the “Chalong Bay".

CHALONG BAY: It offers delicious sea restaurants with a view on the harbour. A lot of trips for tunny-fishing leave from here.

HAT KATA: Along the promontory of  Karon there are two beautiful beaches. A lot of surfers come here form June to November to ride the waves.
